Proud moments!

Well, its been an interesting couple of days here in Kenya. As you may be aware, a referendum was held yesterday to allow the nation to vote on whether or not to adopt the proposed new constitution. Now, final results are not yet out, but so far it looks like the ‘Yes’ camp may have won. I willl leave it to someone with more expertise in the arena of politics to comment on this!

However, this morning I met with some of our Seed of Hope graduates and as we chatted I was extremely proud to hear that they voted. Not only did they vote but they had also read and understood the proposed constitution. They had asked questions where necessary, tried to comprehend the implications and made an educated decision on how to vote. This may seem like a small thing, even insignificant. However, I would like to disagree, I think this is HUGE! These are girls who have not been educated beyond primary education, who come from the poorest backgrounds. They are downtrodden, abused, neglected and worse.

Seed of Hope Graduates - looking forward to a brighter future!

However, through Seed of Hope, they have been truly empowered! They have embraced dignity, opportunity and hope! They not only exercised their right to vote, but they are aware of their rights and are empowered enough to claim them! Wow! This is just another indication of the transformation that is possible when a girl is given the right opportunities.
